"Green Hills of Africa"

The Green Hills of Africa is one of Ernest Hemingway's few pieces of non-fiction literature. His goal in this story was to see if a piece of completely true literature could compete with one that comes from a persons imagination. In doing so he wrote a complete book about a safari he went on in East Africa from December 8, 1933, to February 17, 1934. This book really puts into perspective how much of a risk taker this man really was. That January, even after suffering an attack of dysentery and was rushed for medical treatment to Arusha in northeast Tanganyika and to Nairobi, Kenya, Hemingway still returned to the safari to finish his quest for big game. He truly was the tough rugged adventurer he was perceived to be by many researchers. Overall, Green Hills of Africa thus combines a report about hunters in competitive quest of big game, subjective thoughts on literature, and Hemingway’s conscious and unconscious self-revelations.
